Chapter Fifteen

North Dakota.

The following morning.

Fitzwilliam entered the office and was thankful he was able to have made it. He looked outside when the lights of the sun appeared. He liked seeing how the mountains glowed in the morning; all the colors were beautiful and Fitzwilliam would have never wanted to live in another state. As it would have implied, the evening before, the ranch hands and Lizzy talked about what was going to occur for the week. Fitzwilliam remembered the female lambs, who were expecting, were going to put in a separate stall from the others. As well as the smithy which was going to be taken care of when the blacksmith answered the letter, Fitzwilliam also knew he was going to check how many pieces of gold he had. And knowing he would have to incorporate the liquid with the fabric was also another thing.

As he approached his desk, Fitzwilliam thought. “The last time I incoporated the liquid it took a while. Time was needed for it to be just right. And I also remember the local seamstress wants the cloth before the shop is busy.”

Once Fitzwilliam was seated, he took out the envelope he had of the fingers. He felt his masculine feeling of protection when he remembered how injured Lizzy looked. He was angry with whoever assaulted her and he was determined to find who they were. He was thankful she’d given him enough information about a few of them: one limped and all of them were together. Seven was the number.

“One limps.” He thought.

Fitzwilliam peered around the office to make sure he wasn’t being watched. He was thankful he was currently alone; he knew Dirk would be in later but he didn’t want anyone watching what he was going to do here. When he knew the place was clear, he reached into the desk and took out an old album. With the finger prints put on pause, which he would get to later, Fitzwilliam opened up the photo album. He felt his heart beat when he looked at the first men who were accused or robberies. He looked at their features as he read their names.

“Wanted for robbing a stage coach as well as a few wagons.”

Fitzwilliam read.

He remembered the last sheriff and how he tried to capture these men and Fitzwilliam never forgot how the newspapers explained about his mysterious murdur. Which was peculiar because the sheriff was one of the best their town was blessed to have. Yet that also was a bothering idea. If Fitzwilliam decided to chase them he too could meet a fate like him. But he was sheriff and sacrifice was a part of the role. He prayed he would be able to achieve his role as well as be the husband he wanted to be for Lizzy. Earlier that morning he’d been able to kiss her but she was too occupied with duties on the farm. He chuckled when he remembered how she’d remarked. “Fitzwilliam? The tasks on the farm need to be accomplished.
